Grounding & Earthing Research: Published Studies

The Growing Body of Grounding Research

Since the first formal study was published in 2000, the scientific investigation of grounding (also called earthing) has expanded significantly. What began with a single exploratory trial by Clinton Ober has grown into a body of over 30 peer-reviewed publications spanning sleep science, cardiology, immunology, wound healing, and neuroscience.

These studies have appeared in respected journals including the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Journal of Inflammation Research, Journal of Environmental and Public Health, European Biology and Bioelectromagnetics, FEBS Open Bio, and Advances in Integrative Medicine. Researchers from institutions including the University of California (Davis and Irvine), the University of Oregon, Kyung Hee University, and the Medical University of Bialystok have contributed to this growing field.

This page serves as a comprehensive index of all known published grounding and earthing research. Each entry includes the full citation, a brief summary of findings, and a link to the original publication where available.

Key Research Findings at a Glance

Before diving into the full study index, here are the most significant findings from grounding research to date:

Cortisol normalization and sleep improvement — Grounding during sleep resynchronized cortisol secretion with the natural circadian rhythm and improved subjective sleep quality (Ghaly & Teplitz, 2004).
Reduced blood viscosity — Grounding improved zeta potential of red blood cells, reducing blood viscosity—a major factor in cardiovascular disease (Chevalier et al., 2013).
Inflammation reduction via electron transfer — Earth’s free electrons act as natural antioxidants, neutralizing reactive oxygen species and reducing chronic inflammation (Oschman, 2007; Oschman et al., 2015).
Pain reduction — Subjects who slept grounded reported significant reductions in chronic pain (Ober, 2000).
Improved wound healing — Grounding accelerated recovery from injury and reduced the cardinal signs of inflammation (Oschman et al., 2015).
Autonomic nervous system regulation — Grounding shifted the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic toward parasympathetic activation, improving heart rate variability (Chevalier, 2010).
Improved mood — One hour of grounding significantly improved pleasant and positive moods beyond what relaxation alone could explain (Chevalier, 2015).
Mitochondrial function — Grounded mitochondria produced 5–11% more ATP and generated 22–33% less reactive oxygen species (Giulivi & Kotz, 2025).
Anxiety reduction — Grounding studies suggest it may regulate the autonomic nervous system and reduce anxiety symptoms, offering a potential complementary approach to anxiety management (Koniver, 2024).

The Science Explained: How Does Grounding Work?

The Earth maintains a subtle negative electrical charge on its surface. When you make direct physical contact with the ground—whether barefoot outdoors or through a conductive grounding product indoors—free electrons from the Earth transfer into your body.

These electrons are believed to act as natural antioxidants, neutralizing positively charged free radicals (reactive oxygen species) that drive chronic inflammation. This is the central mechanism proposed by Oschman (2007) and expanded upon in the landmark 2015 review published in the Journal of Inflammation Research.

Think of it this way: inflammation produces free radicals as part of the immune response. Normally, the body relies on dietary antioxidants to neutralize excess free radicals. Grounding research suggests that the Earth itself provides an abundant, external source of electrons that may help the body manage oxidative stress more effectively.

The 2025 study by Giulivi and Kotz at UC Davis added a new dimension to this understanding by demonstrating that grounded mitochondria—the energy-producing organelles in every cell—produced more ATP (energy) while generating fewer damaging reactive oxygen species.
