Cortisol is supposed to fall at night. Here's what to do when it doesn't.

Wired at 11pm, awake at 3am, flat by 10am. That pattern is cortisol running on the wrong clock, and almost everything written about lowering it only covers the hours you are awake.

What "high cortisol" usually means

Cortisol is not the enemy. It is the hormone that gets you out of bed, and it is meant to be highest in the first hour after waking and lowest around midnight. The problem people search for is a flattened or shifted curve: too high in the evening, so you feel wired and tired at once, and rising too early, so you wake at 3am with your mind already running. Breathing, exercise and adaptogens all act on the daytime end of that curve. The steepest drop is supposed to happen while you are asleep, and that is the end most advice never reaches.

Three things to change today

  1. Morning light, evening dark. Ten minutes outside within an hour of waking sets the morning peak where it belongs. Overhead lights off and lamps on for the last hour before bed tells the evening end to drop.
  2. Front-load the caffeine, cut it by early afternoon. Caffeine raises cortisol and has a five to six hour half-life. A 3pm coffee is still working at 3am.
  3. Same wake time, seven days. The cortisol rhythm is a clock. Every clock needs one fixed point, and the one that works is when you get up.

See a doctor if you have unexplained weight change, new high blood pressure, or fatigue that does not lift with sleep. Those are worth testing, not managing.

The eight hours nothing else covers

Everything above acts on the daytime. The overnight fall is where the cortisol studies on grounding actually looked, and it is the one window a sheet covers without you doing anything.

A grounding sheet is a flat sheet woven with fine 316L stainless steel fibre (about 30% steel, 70% cotton). It lies flat on the mattress under your own fitted sheet, and a cord runs from the corner to the earth pin of a wall socket. That gives your body the same electrical connection to the ground you would get standing barefoot on grass, for the whole night, without you doing anything. You never lie on the steel; it works through the bedding.

On the bed, cord to the wall. That is the whole setup.
Lifting the fitted sheet to show the grounding sheet lying flat underneath
Your fitted sheet goes over it. Nobody sees it, and it works through the bedding.

Safety, plainly. The plug's active and neutral pins are plastic; only the earth pin is metal, so the sheet physically cannot connect to mains power. There is a 100kΩ resistor at the snap and a resettable fuse in the plug. It is a high-resistance connection to earth and nothing else.

What the studies looked at. Overnight cortisol rhythm specifically. A small 2004 study of 12 people measured 24-hour cortisol profiles before and after eight weeks of grounded sleep and saw the night-time rhythm move toward normal; later studies looked at sleep quality, inflammation markers and blood flow during grounded rest. The studies are small and we say so. If you want them one at a time, they are written up here.

★★★★★ "Since I started using the grounding sheet, I stopped waking up at 2 or 3 am. This is just amazing!!!" – Verified buyer, verified buyer

★★★★★ "It was about a week of using the ground sheet and then I noticed a huge shift in my sleep patterns. When I wake up in the night, it's easy for me to roll over and fall asleep again." – Verified buyer, verified buyer

Try it for 120 nights

120 nights is long enough to know whether the 3am wake-ups and the 11pm second wind have changed. Sleep on it for up to 120 nights. If it has not done anything for you, return it for a refund. Every sheet is tested for conductivity before it ships, and the conductivity is warranted for three years.

Questions people ask before they try it

Will it lower my cortisol?

We do not make that claim. One small study measured overnight cortisol during grounded sleep and saw the rhythm normalise; that is what the research looked at, and 120 nights is there so you can judge the nights yourself.

Does it work if my partner shares the bed?

One sheet covers the bed. Both of you are grounded; the cord connects at one corner.

Is it safe? It plugs into the wall.

Only the earth pin of the plug is metal; the active and neutral pins are plastic, so it cannot connect to mains power. A 100kΩ resistor sits at the snap and a resettable fuse in the plug. The cord carries no operating voltage.

Does my fitted sheet go over it?

Yes. The grounding sheet lies flat on the mattress and your normal fitted sheet goes over the top. Grounding works through the bedding; you never lie on the steel.

How do I know my socket is earthed?

A socket tester (sold separately, a few dollars) tells you in seconds. Older houses fail this more often than you would think. How to test a grounding sheet walks through it, including a no-tools method.

How do I wash it?

Gentle cycle every couple of months, no bleach and no fabric softener (both coat the fibre), air dry. Treated that way the conductivity is warranted for three years.

Which size do I need?

Single/Twin, Double, Queen, King and Super King. One sheet covers the bed for both of you; pick your mattress size on the product page.

What if I feel nothing?

Some people notice a change in the first week, some take a month, and for some it does nothing they can feel. That is why the trial is 120 nights: long enough to know either way.

The daytime is covered. Give the night a tool.

Light, caffeine timing and a fixed wake time for the day. Then the one thing that works on the overnight curve while you are asleep.
