Can I Use a Fitted Sheet Over My Grounding Sheet?

Dr. Sarah Mitchell

Yes, you can and should use a fitted sheet over your grounding sheet. A cotton or linen fitted sheet placed over the grounding sheet is the recommended setup — conductivity passes through natural fibres, and the fitted sheet protects the grounding sheet from body oils, extending its lifespan.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive. The grounding sheet itself is a flat sheet that lays on your mattress. Your regular fitted sheet goes on top of it. You sleep on your fitted sheet as normal.

Why Is a Fitted Sheet Over the Grounding Sheet Recommended?

Using a fitted sheet over your grounding sheet is better than sleeping directly on the grounding sheet for several practical reasons:

It protects the grounding sheet. Body oils, sweat, and skincare products can coat conductive fibres over time. A fitted sheet acts as a barrier, keeping the grounding sheet cleaner for longer.
It reduces washing frequency. You wash your fitted sheet weekly as normal. The grounding sheet only needs washing every 1 to 3 months when protected by a fitted sheet.
It feels familiar. You sleep on your regular fitted sheet, so the texture and feel of your bed doesn't change.
Grounding still works. Natural fibres allow enough electrical conductivity through for the grounding effect to function. You don't lose the benefits.

How to Set Up Your Grounding Sheet With a Fitted Sheet

1
Lay the grounding sheet flat on your mattress. The grounding sheet is not a fitted sheet — it lays flat across the mattress surface. Smooth it out so it sits evenly.
2
Place your cotton or linen fitted sheet over the grounding sheet. Tuck the fitted sheet corners around the mattress as you normally would. The grounding sheet is held in place underneath.
3
Connect the grounding cord. Attach the grounding cord to the snap button on the grounding sheet and plug the other end into the earth pin of your outlet. The cord connects to the earth pin only — not to live electricity.
4
Add your duvet or blanket on top as normal. Your bed setup remains the same — the only addition is the grounding sheet layer underneath your fitted sheet.

Joanne LeBlanc, a verified customer, described this exact setup: "I put the grounding sheet under my covered sheet and didn't tell my husband to see if he would notice the difference. He did notice a difference. He sleeps deeper and recuperates better after his night shifts."

Which Fitted Sheet Fabrics Work Best?

Not all fitted sheets are equal when it comes to grounding. Natural fibres allow conductivity through. Synthetic fibres block it.

Fabrics that work:

100% cotton — The best and most common option. Widely available, breathable, and allows excellent conductivity.
Linen — Natural flax fibre. Excellent conductivity, durable, and breathable.
Bamboo / lyocell — Natural plant-based fibre. Soft, moisture-wicking, and conductive enough for grounding to work.

Fabrics that block grounding:

100% polyester — Synthetic fibre that repels moisture and insulates electrically. Will block grounding entirely.
Microfibre — Usually synthetic. Check the label — if it's polyester-based, it will block conductivity.
Cotton-polyester blends — The higher the polyester percentage, the more it reduces conductivity. A 50/50 blend may not provide reliable grounding. If in doubt, choose 100% cotton.

What About a Mattress Protector?

Many mattress protectors are made from synthetic, waterproof materials. If your mattress protector is placed between the grounding sheet and your body, it may block conductivity.

The grounding sheet should be placed on top of any mattress protector — not underneath it. The layer order from bottom to top should be: mattress, mattress protector (if used), grounding sheet, then fitted sheet.

How Do I Know It's Working Through My Fitted Sheet?

You can verify grounding is working through your fitted sheet using a continuity multimeter. Place one probe on the grounding cord snap button and the other on top of your fitted sheet. If the multimeter shows continuity or a low resistance reading, your setup is working correctly.

You can also check your outlet has a functioning earth connection using a socket tester, which confirms the outlet is properly wired before you connect anything to it.

Geoff Robertson, a verified customer, tested this himself: "I was a bit skeptical about having a grounding sheet under a fitted sheet but I tested it and it works. Well made and shipping was fast."

Common Mistakes With Grounding Sheet Setup

Placing the grounding sheet under the mattress topper. The grounding sheet needs to be close to your body — only one layer of natural fabric between you and the sheet. Under a thick topper won't work.
Using a polyester fitted sheet. Check the label. If your fitted sheet is polyester or a high-polyester blend, conductivity will be blocked. Switch to 100% cotton.
Forgetting to connect the grounding cord. The sheet itself isn't grounded until the cord is connected to a properly earthed outlet.

Lucinda Cowden shared her experience learning the correct setup: "It took me a while to get it right — I put it under my mattress topper at first! But it's brilliant now that I shifted it just under my sheet. I've had sleep issues through menopause and haven't slept through the night for ages... I am now!"

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a fitted sheet over a grounding sheet?

Yes. Using a cotton, linen, or bamboo fitted sheet over your grounding sheet is the recommended setup. The grounding sheet lays flat on the mattress, and your fitted sheet goes over the top. Conductivity passes through natural fibres. Avoid polyester or synthetic fitted sheets, which block conductivity.

Does a fitted sheet reduce the effectiveness of grounding?

A natural fibre fitted sheet (cotton, linen, or bamboo) does not significantly reduce grounding effectiveness. The electrical conductivity of the stainless steel passes through natural fabrics. The grounding effect is maintained. Synthetic fabrics like polyester will block conductivity entirely.

What order should the layers go in on my bed?

From bottom to top: mattress, mattress protector (optional), grounding sheet (flat), then your cotton or linen fitted sheet on top. Your duvet or blanket goes over you as normal. The grounding cord connects from the snap button on the grounding sheet to the earth pin of your outlet.
