“Do Grounding Sheets Really Work? I Was Sure They Didn't.”

What the studies measured, what they didn't, and how to test it on your own sleep.

“I was sceptical about grounding until it changed how my family sleeps. Me first, then my wife Alana, then our daughter. Now my parents and most of my extended family sleep on it too. I would never sell you something I don't sleep on myself.”

Meet James: The Sceptic Who Ended Up Making Grounding Sheets

His first verdict? “Sounds like rubbish.”

James was waking at 2am most nights. When someone suggested a grounding sheet, it sounded like something from a late-night infomercial. He tried it anyway, mostly to prove a point.

It didn't prove the point he expected.

He and his wife Alana started sleeping deeper and waking with more in the tank. Then their daughter. Then his parents.

So he did what sceptics do. He read the studies, put a meter on every sheet he could find, and made one he'd trust on his own bed.

That's how Premium Grounding started.

The Science: What The Research Shows, And What It Doesn't

What's Happening While You Sleep

The earth's surface carries a natural negative charge. Indoors, on a mattress, you're insulated from it. A grounding sheet's stainless steel threads connect you, through a cord, to the earth pin of your power point: the same earth your appliances' third prong uses. Your body's electrical charge settles to the earth's.

That part is basic physics, and even the sceptics concede it. The fair question is whether it changes anything you'd notice. Here is what the research has actually measured.

Four Studies, Read Honestly

  • Sleep and cortisol: 12 adults with sleep, pain and stress complaints slept grounded for 8 weeks. Night-time cortisol in saliva samples fell, and most reported sleeping better. No control group. Ghaly & Teplitz, 2004

  • Mood: 40 adults, double-blind against a fake (sham) connection. One hour grounded improved self-rated mood more than the sham. Chevalier, 2015

  • Blood cells: 10 adults grounded for two hours. Red blood cells carried more surface charge and clumped less in a lab test; blood viscosity itself wasn’t measured. Chevalier et al., 2013

  • Inflammation: a review in the Journal of Inflammation Research proposing how grounding might affect inflammation. Hypotheses, not a trial. Oschman et al., 2015

Small pilots, several run by researchers with ties to a grounding company. That's why you won't see us call grounding “proven”. None of these studies has been retracted, and nobody has yet run the large trial that would settle it. So we'd rather hand you the means to settle it on your own sleep.

Don't Take Our Word For It. Test It On Your Own Sleep.

Here's how sceptical customers settle it for themselves

  • Sleep on it for 120 nights: keep it, or send it back for a refund.
  • Put a meter on it: every sheet is conductivity-tested before dispatch, and you can confirm it at home.
  • Don't tell your partner: slip it under the fitted sheet and see if they notice.
  • Check your tracker: compare a few weeks of deep sleep on your ring or watch.
  • Keep your own bedding: it works under a cotton or linen fitted sheet and through pyjamas.
  • Check your outlet first: the cord uses the earth pin only, with a 100k ohm safety resistor.

Chevalier G. The effect of grounding the human body on mood. Psychol Rep. 2015;116(2):534-42. PMID 25748085.

Key findings

  • “Pleasant and positive moods statistically significantly improved among grounded-but not sham-grounded-participants.”
  • Effect sizes and group sizes are not stated in the abstract.

Limits

One 1-hour session, self-rated mood only; nothing about sleep or a bed sheet. The author has contracted for a grounding company (Earth FX).

Abstract

Earthing (grounding) refers to bringing the body in contact with the Earth. Health benefits were previously reported, but no study exists about mood. This study was conducted to assess if Earthing improves mood. 40 adult participants were either grounded or sham-grounded (no grounding) for 1 hr. while relaxing in a comfortable recliner chair equipped with a conductive pillow, mat, and patches connecting them to the ground. This pilot project was double-blinded and the Brief Mood Introspection Scale (comprising 4 mood scales) was used. Pleasant and positive moods statistically significantly improved among grounded-but not sham-grounded-participants. It is concluded that the 1-hr. contact with the Earth improved mood more than expected by relaxation alone. More extensive studies are, therefore, warranted.

Ghaly M, Teplitz D. The biologic effects of grounding the human body during sleep as measured by cortisol levels and subjective reporting of sleep, pain, and stress. J Altern Complement Med. 2004;10(5):767-76. PMID 15650465.

Key findings

  • “cortisol levels significantly reduced during night-time sleep”
  • “Subjectively reported symptoms, including sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress were reduced or eliminated in nearly all subjects.”
  • No percentage reduction is given in the abstract.

Limits

12 people, no control group, self-reported symptoms. Changes were “most apparent in females”.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Diurnal cortisol secretion levels were measured and circadian cortisol profiles were evaluated in a pilot study conducted to test the hypothesis that grounding the human body to earth during sleep will result in quantifiable changes in cortisol. It was also hypothesized that grounding the human body would result in changes in sleep, pain, and stress (anxiety, depression, irritability), as measured by subjective reporting. SUBJECTS AND INTERVENTIONS: Twelve (12) subjects with complaints of sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress were grounded to earth during sleep for 8 weeks in their own beds using a conductive mattress pad. Saliva tests were administered to establish pregrounding baseline cortisol levels. Levels were obtained at 4-hour intervals for a 24-hour period to determine the circadian cortisol profile. Cortisol testing was repeated at week 6. Subjective symptoms of sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress were reported daily throughout the 8-week test period. RESULTS: Measurable improvements in diurnal cortisol profiles were observed, with cortisol levels significantly reduced during night-time sleep. Subjects' 24-hour circadian cortisol profiles showed a trend toward normalization. Subjectively reported symptoms, including sleep dysfunction, pain, and stress were reduced or eliminated in nearly all subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that grounding the human body to earth ("earthing") during sleep reduces night-time levels of cortisol and resynchronizes cortisol hormone secretion more in alignment with the natural 24-hour circadian rhythm profile. Changes were most apparent in females. Furthermore, subjective reporting indicates that grounding the human body to earth during sleep improves sleep and reduces pain and stress.

Chevalier G, Sinatra ST, Oschman JL, Delany RM. Earthing (grounding) the human body reduces blood viscosity-a major factor in cardiovascular disease. J Altern Complement Med. 2013;19(2):102-10. PMID 22757749.

Key findings

  • “Earthing or grounding increased zeta potentials in all samples by an average of 2.70 and significantly reduced RBC aggregation.”
  • Blood viscosity itself was not measured, despite the title.

Limits

Funded by Earth FX Inc.; three authors are contractors and shareholders. Seated patches, not a sheet. People on blood thinners should have clotting monitored.

Abstract

Objectives: Emerging research is revealing that direct physical contact of the human body with the surface of the earth (grounding or earthing) has intriguing effects on human physiology and health, including beneficial effects on various cardiovascular risk factors. This study examined effects of 2 hours of grounding on the electrical charge (zeta potential) on red blood cells (RBCs) and the effects on the extent of RBC clumping. Design/interventions: Subjects were grounded with conductive patches on the soles of their feet and palms of their hands. Wires connected the patches to a stainless-steel rod inserted in the earth outdoors. Small fingertip pinprick blood samples were placed on microscope slides and an electric field was applied to them. Electrophoretic mobility of the RBCs was determined by measuring terminal velocities of the cells in video recordings taken through a microscope. RBC aggregation was measured by counting the numbers of clustered cells in each sample. Settings/location: Each subject sat in a comfortable reclining chair in a soundproof experiment room with the lights dimmed or off. Subjects: Ten (10) healthy adult subjects were recruited by word-of-mouth. Results: Earthing or grounding increased zeta potentials in all samples by an average of 2.70 and significantly reduced RBC aggregation. Conclusions: Grounding increases the surface charge on RBCs and thereby reduces blood viscosity and clumping. Grounding appears to be one of the simplest and yet most profound interventions for helping reduce cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular events.

Grounding Sheets: Your Questions, Answered Straight

Do grounding sheets really work?

The physics is settled: the sheet connects you to the earth, and a meter can show it. The health research is early: small pilot studies, promising on sleep and mood, not proven.

Customers rate the sheet 4.8 out of 5 from 884 reviews. About half of those who say when they noticed a change felt it within the first week, and some noticed nothing. That spread is why you get 120 nights.

Are grounding sheets legit, or a scam?

The sheet itself is simple and checkable. Stainless steel conducts, the cord connects to the earth pin, and a meter shows the connection. What gives this category a bad name is overclaiming, sheets that quietly stop conducting, and refunds that never happen.

We do the opposite: no miracle claims, a sheet tested before it ships, and the full return terms written right here on this page.

Isn’t it just placebo?

For some people, it might be, and we won’t pretend otherwise. The best-designed study so far compared grounding with a sham connection and found a difference, but it was 40 people for one hour.

So customers test it: they don’t tell their partner, they watch their sleep tracker, they put a meter on it. As one wrote: “Whether it’s the grounding effect or just a placebo boost, I’m getting better rest.”

Hasn’t earthing been debunked?

No study has been retracted, and no large trial has shown it does nothing. No large trial has shown it works either. One independent, sham-controlled pilot found better sleep-quality scores over 12 weeks, though only 15 people finished it, all with mild Alzheimer’s disease (Lin et al., 2022). The honest status: early, promising, unproven.

Does it use electricity? Is it safe to sleep on?

No current runs through the sheet. The plug connects to the earth pin only, and the SafePath™ cord has a built-in 100k ohm safety resistor.

Check your outlet with a socket tester first, because in some older homes the earth isn’t connected. If you take blood thinners or thyroid medication, or have a medical condition, check with your doctor before you start.

Do I need to sleep directly on it?

No. The 30% stainless steel weave conducts through a cotton or linen fitted sheet and through cotton pyjamas. Thick synthetic fabrics like polyester carry the connection less well.

How do I know it’s actually grounding me?

Every sheet is conductivity-tested before dispatch. At home, set a multimeter to resistance, touch one probe to the sheet and the other to the plug’s earth pin: you should read close to 100k ohms, the safety resistor in the cord.

A meter shows the connection works. How you sleep is the part only you can judge.

Why stainless steel instead of silver?

Silver-coated thread oxidises with sweat, body oils and washing, and conducts less as the coating wears. Our sheets weave solid 316L stainless steel through 30% of the fabric, so there’s no coating to lose. That’s why we can back it with a warranty of up to 10 years.

How quickly will I notice anything?

Of the reviews that mention timing, 28% noticed something the first night, 23% within the week, 26% after 2 to 4 weeks and 9% after 1 to 3 months. 13% hadn’t noticed a change yet. Some people sleep worse for a few nights at first.

What if it doesn’t work for me?

You have 120 nights from delivery. We suggest about 90 nights of consistent use, but you can return it any time inside the 120. Email contact@premiumgrounding.com.

Return the sheet clean and undamaged in its original packaging, and you’re refunded minus the original shipping cost; return postage is yours. Free gifts must come back unused, or their retail value is deducted.

The only thing you have to lose is a few weeks of poor sleep.

Read the studies. Read the critical reviews. Then sleep on it for 120 nights and decide with your own data.

P.S. I was the sceptic in the room too. If you're reading this at 2am wondering whether any of it is real, that's exactly where I was. Put it under your fitted sheet, don't tell anyone, and see what you notice.

Lin CH, Tseng ST, Chuang YC, Kuo CE, Chen NC. Grounding the Body Improves Sleep Quality in Patients with Mild Alzheimer's Disease: A Pilot Study. Healthcare (Basel). 2022;10(3):581. Erratum: 2022;10(6):988. PMID 35327058.

Key findings

  • Sleep-quality scores improved with grounding compared with sham grounding.
  • Anxiety and depression scores did not change significantly.

Limits

15 people finished, all with mild Alzheimer’s disease. An erratum was published.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Grounding refers to having direct contact with the Earth, such as by walking barefoot or lying on the ground. Research has found that grounding can improve inflammation, free radical damage, blood pressure, sleep quality, pain, stress, mood, and wound healing. However, there has been no research on the effect of utilizing grounding for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Thus, in this study, we investigated the effectiveness of grounding as a non-pharmacological therapy for treating sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression in patients with mild AD. METHODS: Patients with mild AD were enrolled in the study. The electrochemical analyzer CHI 1205b was employed to check the electrochemical signals at acupoints KI1 and GV16. We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) to evaluate sleep quality, anxiety, and depression, respectively, at weeks 0 and 12. RESULTS: This 12-week placebo-controlled study enrolled 22 patients, but only 15 patients completed the 12-week intervention and survey. Grounding significantly improved PSQI scores compared to the sham-grounding group (mean ± SD: 0.3 ± 0.7 vs. 3.0 ± 1.9, p = 0.006). The scores on the BAI and BDI-II did not change significantly after grounding in comparison to the sham-grounding group. CONCLUSIONS: Grounding can improve sleep quality, but it does not significantly improve anxiety and depression among patients with mild AD.
